'"So persuasive an Eloquence"? Roles for women
on the eighteenth-century stage'
Tuesday 18th October 2005
6.30pm in Woolley Lecture Theatre N395
Penny Gay’s main research interest is in theatre history from Shakespeare to contemporary Australian drama. Her books include As She Likes It: Shakespeare's Unruly Women (Routledge, 1994), Jane Austen and the Theatre (Cambridge University Press, 2002), and editions of Twelfth Night and The Merchant of Venice. Her current ARC grant is titled 'Speaking Women: Actresses' roles in English drama, 1737-1800'. This will develop her earlier work on the representation of women, and in particular their often transgressive speech, in the public domain of the theatre. Her lecture (illustrated with contemporary images and live readings) will explore the performative and affective nature of female dramatic eloquence in comedy, sentimental drama, and tragedy in this formative period.
Refreshments will be served before the lecture from 6.00 pm
in the main foyer of the Woolley Building.
All welcome. Admission free.
