Entry requirements
Bachelor degree with a major in a relevant field in the humanities or social sciences with a distinction average or equivalent. Applicants should contact the Postgraduate Coordinator to discuss their application before proceeding to apply in order to identify possible supervisors. Applications should contain an outline of not less than 1000 words detailing the proposed program of advanced coursework and research.
Course structure
Candidates are required to complete an approved program of advanced study comprising either:
(i) one postgraduate unit of study chosen from the PACS program and a thesis of 28,000 – 30,000 words;
(ii) two postgraduate units of study chosen from the PACS program and a thesis of 26,000 – 28,000 words; or
(iii) a thesis of 30,000 – 35,000 words. All candidates are required to submit a thesis on an approved topic.
Research and writing are carried out under the supervision of a member of staff.
Full-time: 2 years. Part-time: 4 years.

Bachelor degree with Honours Class I or II, with appropriate majors in the humanities or social sciences, or an MA with Merit with a dissertation in an appropriate subject area. Applicants should contact the Postgraduate Coordinator to discuss their application before proceeding to apply in order to confirm eligibility and identify possible supervisors. Applications should contain a detailed C.V. and details of proposed program of study.
Course structure
Candidates may be required to undertake coursework. All candidates are required to submit a thesis of between 40,000 - 60,000 words on an approved topic. Research and writing are carried out under the supervision of a member of staff.
Full-time: 1 – 2 years. Part-time: 2 – 4 years.
Entry requirements
Bachelor degree with 1st or upper 2nd class division 1 Honours or equivalent. Applicants should contact the Postgraduate Coordinator to discuss their application before proceeding to apply in order to identify possible supervisors. Applications should contain a detailed C.V., a research proposal of not less than 1000 words outlining the intended research and type of method to be employed.
Course structure
Candidates may be required to undertake coursework. All candidates are required to submit a thesis of between 70,000 - 100,000 words on an approved topic. Research and writing are carried out under the supervision of a member of staff.
Full-time: 3 – 4 years. Part-time: 3 – 8 years.
Entry requirements
One of: Bachelor degree with 1st or 2nd class Honours or equivalent; Master degree by research or equivalent; Master degree by coursework with Merit or equivalent; Bachelor degree or equivalent with a substantial portfolio of published/professional work (for example, books, films, TV programs, creative work, government reports etc); AND a minimum of three years recent, full-time employment or professional experience in a relevant field. Applicants should contact the Postgraduate Coordinator to discuss their application before proceeding to apply. Applications should contain a detailed C.V. and an outline of the proposed course of advanced study and research, including the area of the proposed thesis, as well as evidence of at least three years recent relevant professional experience.
Course structure
Candidates are required to complete five units of study (30 credit points), including ARTS9001 Arguing the Point and four PACS postgraduate units of study, plus a 50,000-word research thesis.
Full-time 3 – 4 years. Part-time 3 – 8 years.

Local students
The Research Training Scheme (RTS) provides Commonwealth funded Higher Degree Research students with an ‘entitlement’ to a HECS exemption up to a maximum period of four years full-time equivalent for a PhD or a Doctorate by research, and two years full-time equivalent for an Mphil or MA (Research)
How to apply
International students
The University of Sydney has specific requirements for international students wishing to enrol in a course of postgraduate study. For example, if English is not your first language, you will need to demonstrate language proficiency by a TOEFL score of at least 575 (computer based score 233) plus Test of Written English (TWE) of 4.5, or IELTS score of at least 6.5 overall with a minimum 6.0 in each band.
