Apply for Honours
Entry Requirements
In general, a student must gain at least Credit results (65%) in 8 Senior Units of Study in the Honours subject area (48 credit points). Some departments have specific units of study that must be completed before applying for Honours. For example, to do Honours in Performance Studies in 2009, you must obtain Credit results in PRFM 3961 and PRFM 3962, and a minimum of a Credit average in a further 6 units of study in Performance Studies.
Most importantly, as soon as you decide you may want to do Honours in a subject area of your choice, you should confirm with the Honours Coordinator of the department in which you wish to study exactly what the specific requirements will be for that subject area and plan your degree structure accordingly. This information is detailed in the Faculty of Arts Handbook and on the departmental websites.
Even if you decide later not to enrol in the Honours year, those second and third year pre-honours units still count towards your major and degree total, so you lose nothing by completing them.
How to Apply
In the first instance you should discuss your intention to apply for Honours with the relevant department's Honours Coordinator. See the Honours Coordinators list for details of Faculty of Arts Honours coordinators.
There are separate forms for current University of Sydney students continuing with Honours and for Honours Conversion applicants (that is, previous University of Sydney students and graduates of other universities). Make sure you submit all of the information requested on the application form so your application can be processed.
When to Apply
Current University of Sydney students who are completing their degree in Semester 2 and intend to apply for Honours in semester 1 of the following year should consult the Faculty of Arts regarding application requirements during pre-enrolment in October.
Honours Conversion Applications for Semester 1 open in the first week of September and close October 31st
Honours Conversion Applications for Semester 2 open in the first week of April and close June 30th
Honours Conversion
Students who have completed a degree at another university and who wish to complete their Honours year in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Sydney may apply for Honours Conversion. You must have completed a major in the subject area in which you wish to undertake Honours and the University of Sydney department in which you intend to enrol will make an assessment of the equivalence of the units of study that you have completed in your degree, and must give their permission in writing before the Faculty will admit you to the Honours program. To apply, complete an Honours Conversion form and submit it to the Faculty of Arts Office either in person or by mail.
