How do I major in ICLS?

The major in ICLS is designed to meet the needs of an increasingly global society by equipping students with cross-literary, cross-cultural and interdisciplinary knowledge, understanding and expertise to live, work and succeed in a highly mobile and diverse environment.

Prerequisites: There are no specific ICLS Units of Study at junior level. Students wishing to study ICLS at senior level must have completed at least 18 junior credit points from part A of the table of units of study, of which 12 credit points are from one subject; or have obtained special permission from the .

Units of study in ICLS rotate yearly with three units of 6 credit points each offered in each year of enrolment. All units in ICLS are team-taught by three or four academics from different departments.

Students who wish to major in ICLS must complete 36 senior credit points normally consisting of:

  • 36 senior credit points from ICLS units of study (i.e. 6 units over 2 years);

OR

  • at least 24 senior credit points from ICLS units of study (i.e. at least 4 units over 2 years); and
  • 12 senior credit points from the relevant cross-listed units of study (consult the for advice).

Most ICLS units of study are cross-listed with English, European Studies and International Global Studies and count towards a major for English. Some language departments also cross-list ICLS units of study for partial credit towards their majors; students should consult individual language departments for further information. Students therefore do not necessarily have to major in ICLS to enrol in ICLS units of study.

There are no language prerequisites for Undergraduate study as all units of study are conducted in English and use texts in English. Study of a language other than English is, however, encouraged in conjunction with ICLS units of study, and reading knowledge of at least one language other than English is required for Honours and Postgraduate study.
