Undergraduate Study

The Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies offers two inter-related areas of study:

Arabic Language and Literature

Units of study that deal with arabic language and literature start with the code 'ARBC'.

These are language based units and deal with Arabic language material (advanced classes are conducted mostly in Arabic).

Arabic language programs are offered in two streams:

  • The beginners stream where first year units focus on language acquistion and skills. Students taking these units are able to develop their language skills and knowledge of Arabic literature in subsequent years.
  • The advanced stream is designed for students with sufficient experience of Arabic (HSC Arabic or equivalent) and who already read and write in Arabic.

Arab World, Islam and the Middle East

Units of study that deal with the Arab world, Islam and the Middle East start with the code 'ARIS'.

Classes and texts are in English.

Arab World, Islam and the Middle East units deal with the history, civilisation, society and politics of the place of Islam in history and in the modern world. ARIS units are open to students whether they are taking ARBC units or not.

Completing a major in Arabic and Islamic studies

A major combines both ARBC and ARIS units in a flexible program that allows more emphasis on either group of units. Students planning to undertake fourth year Honours in Arabic and Islamic Studies need to complete sufficient units, with credit average from both ARBC and ARIS offerings.

Please refer to the units of study outlines for more information.
