EYE-SITE: SITUATING PRACTICE AND THEORY IN THE VISUAL ARTS

Wednesday 30 November to Friday 2 December 2005

The 2005 annual conference of the Art Association of Australia and New Zealand is being hosted jointly by the Sydney College of the Arts and the Department of Art History and Theory/Power Institute Foundation for Art & Visual Culture.

To celebrate the liaison between these two wings of the visual arts at the University of Sydney, the theme of practice and theory has been declared. The three broad thematic divisions of the conference are as follows:

  • From the studio to the study. The historical relation between ideas of art and its material practice, from antiquity to the present.
  • Practitioners as theoreticians. This section encompasses issues of artists’ writings, statements, and pedagogy. It includes indigenous and non-western arts, and the status of theory in primarily oral cultures. It considers the possibility of theorizing through the art-work. Practitioners are encouraged to propose papers in this section.
  • Contemporary practices and critical theory. This section will include film and new media, and the relation between new technologies and their languages of articulation.

A call for session topics by prospective session chairs is now announced. A number of session themes have been proposed. Offers of papers that fall within the conference theme will also be considered at this time. Closing date for session topics is 1 June 2005.

Sessions that fall outside the conference theme will also be considered. Two special workshops are planned:

  • Workshop for postgraduates on writing and research
  • Workshop on the digitisation of visual resources and slide libraries
