Duration

This qualification is normally completed in 1 year of full time study or up to 3 years part time.

Entry Requirements

A recognised Bachelor degree with a major in the relevant field, or equivalent professional experience in a relevant field.

Completion Requirements

36 credit points (6 units of study); comprising 12 credit points of core units, 6 credits points of Gallery Internship, at least 6 credit points of required elective and 12 credit points of elective units.
Graduate Diploma students will undertake two core units and one compulsory Gallery Internship unit. The core units of study (Art and Curatorship; The Art Museum: Past, Present, Future) are taught in conjunction with staff at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and introduce students to key historical, theoretical and critical issues germane to art curatorship and the art museum and gallery sector. The Gallery Internship is a project-based internship in an art gallery or appropriate art organisation and provides students with essential professional exposure and experience.
All Art Curatorship students must also chose at least one of the two required electives, which focus on fundamental curatorial issues and skills. Remaining units will be chosen from a pool of available options in art history, film studies and museum studies.
Gallery Internship
A key feature of the Art Curatorship degree is the Gallery Internship. This is a project-based internship of 20 days, under the supervision of a designated workplace supervisor, in a relevant art gallery, museum or other art institution, in Sydney, elsewhere in Australia, or overseas. The Internship provides hands-on curatorial training and development of essential professional skills. Students are supported at all stages of their internship by our Internship Officer. In most cases, it is recommended that students commence their internship after they have completed one semester of study, to allow sufficient time for planning and for completion of one core unit of study, to introduce relevant issues and concepts.
