Research Workshops
‘Circulation’
A workshop held at the Department of Art History & Theory, University of Sydney, August 5th 2005.
The purpose of the workshop was to examine the common concept of ‘circulation’ in use between Art History and other disciplines, to tease out some of the intellectual implications of these usages, and to make available these ideas in a way which could be of research reference, particularly for postgraduates. There was no grand theory or final statements in these papers which sought just to put out some of these concepts and tools for use as desired.
Those who spoke were
- John Clark; Introduction;
- Jennifer Milam: Circulation of art in the 18th century;
- Peter Reeves: Genetic theory on biological replication across generations;
- Nick Riemer: Circulation and Semantics;
- Meredith Morse: Circulation in Capital markets and the purging of the unexpected;
- Michael Carter: on Simmel;
- Yao Souchou: Malinovski and the kula;
- Julian Pefanis: The Gift economy - Mauss to Baudrillard;
- Francis Marravillas: Circulation and Cultural Studies;
- Tony Bond: Circulation and art: a curator’s view.
Some of the participants have made their papers available for others to download here, and I have added another by Russel Storer, 11, which is relevant.
