The Department of Classics and Ancient History offers an interdisciplinary postgraduate program in Ancient World Studies.

The Ancient World Studies program gives students the opportunity to pursue broad interdisciplinary studies in the ancient world at postgraduate level. Drawing on a range of disciplines including Ancient History, Classics, Philosophy, Museum Studies, Archaeology, Modern Greek, Hebrew and Jewish Studies, and Religious Studies, the units provide great diversity in the study of ancient cultures and languages while allowing students to tailor programs to suit their individual interests. Students, in whichever award course they are enrolled, will normally take half the required units from one of the discipline-based subject areas in the Ancient World Studies program, thereby creating a specific academic pathway within the flexible interdisciplinary framework.

The program has a strong focus on the civilisations and languages of the ancient world, but it also emphasises contemporary critical responses to ancient culture. Students may choose to do units on historiographical practice, the modern transmission of ancient culture, and Asian as well as European ancient cultures.
Ancient World Studies offers various teaching situations, including face-to-face seminars, online learning, supervised reading, and dissertation units.
