Postgraduate Research Programs

Doctor of Philosophy

Candidates are required to have one of the following degrees in Ancient History, Greek or Latin:

  • a Master of Philosophy;
  • an appropriate Master of Arts or Master of Letters degree;
  • a Bachelor of Arts degree with First Class Honours, or Second Class (Division I) Honours;
  • or an equivalent qualification at another University.

Intending candidates for the Doctor of Classics and Ancient History degree must complete a research thesis of 70,000-100,000 words which embodies original research. The choice of topic is governed by the availability of material and the ability of the department to provide supervision. Research and writing will be carried out under the supervision of an academic staff member.

Master of Philosophy

Intending candidates are required to have one of the following degrees in Classics and Ancient History:

  • an appropriate Master of Arts or Master of Letters degree;
  • a Bachelor of Arts degree with First or Second Class Honours;
  • or an equivalent qualification at another University.
  • Candidates will complete a research thesis of between 40,00 and 60,000 words, under the supervision of an academic staff member.
