Frequently Asked Questions

What subjects do I need to take to complete a major in Chinese Studies?

  • A major in Chinese Studies comprises 36 senior CHNS credit points. Cross-listing is normally not permitted. Which units you should take depends on how much Chinese you already know when you enter our program. For detailed advice, please click here.

Can I count my first-year subjects to my major?

  • If the first digit of the numerical part of the unit of study code is "1" (e.g., CHNS 1101), this indicates a junior unit of study. Junior units of study can NOT be counted to a major.

I want to study Chinese. What do I do when the computer won't let me enroll?

  • From late October 2007 students enrolling in the junior units CHNS 1101 Chinese 1A (For Beginners) and CHNS 1201 Chinese 1C (For Advanced Beginners) no longer require placement interviews. You should be able to enrol directly into these units online. Please read carefully the description of these units to decide which one is right for you. If you would like advice on which unit to choose please contact a member of staff.

Students wishing to enrol directly into senior units (for example students who can already read and write Chinese well), still need to attend a placement interview. Please contact the coordinator of the unit that you hope to take. You can do this in consultation hours during the semester, otherwise by email.

Do take note of the deadlines for adding units of study. Make sure that you have your placement interview no later than the Thursday of the second week of the semester.

Can I go on exchange to a Chinese university? What other opportunities are there for studying Chinese in China?

  • Click here for information about Chinese in-country study. Information about the School's Language Student Travel Scholarships will be available towards the end of 2007.

It doesn't matter if I miss First Week, does it?

  • Wrong. All lectures, classes and tutorials in Chinese Studies subjects start in the first week of each semester. All enrolled students are expected to attend from the beginning. We cover a lot of ground in that first week.

Where is the department?

  • Level six of the Brennan MacCallum Building on the Main Campus.
