To UNSUBSCRIBE, send the message: "unsubscribe romarch" to
the same above address.
You will get back a very short file with the message that you are subscribed,
and this longer welcome and instructional message. You can get help by
sending a short command "help" to the same address. You can retrieve
this information file by sending the short command "info romarch" to the
same majordomo address.
-------------------------
If you wish to sign up for both ROMARCH and GREEKARCH, the companion list for Greek art and archaeology (ca. 1000 BC - AD 700), sign up for GROMARCH by sending the message: "subscribe gromarch" to the same above address. NOTE that you should unsubscribe from ROMARCH when signing up for GROMARCH, so as not to get double messages. Messages posted to GROMARCH go to both lists ROMARCH and GREEKARCH, and everyone signed up to GROMARCH receives (just 1 copy) of all messages posted to both lists. See here for More Info on GROMARCH
-------------------------
Make ALL POSTINGS (i.e. public queries, comments, responses) to the list
NOTE!!!! Romarch is an _unmoderated_ list; You can help keep the list clean by subscribing and posting to the correct addresses (as listed above!), and by observing protocol (listed below!).
ROMARCH is meant to facilitate scholarly interchange in two central
areas:
A) The material cultures of ancient Italy, from ca. 1000 BC to
AD 700, including Etruscans, Samnites, Romans, Greeks, etc...
B) The material cultures of all Roman provinces, including Roman
interaction with local populations and cultures.
Ideally, this group will foster communication between professionals, students, and laypersons. It will serve as an exchange for queries and answers, act as a bulletin board for recent discoveries and news, and (with the permission of the listowner; please run them by me first!) notices of jobs, excavations, projects, and publications. ROMARCH will also be a sounding board for those wishing to test their ideas or arguments, and become a 'forum' for general discussions.
Individuals wishing to compile (translated into English) recent news reports or conference summaries on Roman issues in various European and Mediterranean countries are most welcome; volunteers in that area, please contact: pfoss@umich.edu
B) If you wish to extend, re-direct, or elaborate upon a topic, replying ON-LIST is fine. This is the DISCUSSION element of the group.
Ideally, we can have useful, clutter-free information exchange, without
diluting the vigor or quality of discussions. (it is worth striving for!).
Naturally, some discussions take on a life of their own, and an original
question can become transformed into an interesting, lively debate. That
is Good; Romarch should be an active list. Vigorous debate
about issues or evidence is actively encouraged!
An archive is now in operation (see below).
Cross-posting of messages from other lists is discouraged; it usually creates
more clutter than it is worth.
ad hominem attacks will be considered in the poorest taste, and will be roundly condemned if they appear on-list. All necessary steps will be taken to remove any subscriber whose purpose is to make the rest of us miserable.
B) THE ARCHIVE: Each day's worth of messages posted to Romarch is put in a separate file, identified by the day it was posted and its ordinal number that day, i.e. 'yymmdd.#', where y=year, m=month, d=day, and #=the ordinal number of the message. For example, message 'romarch.950418.3' would be the third message posted on April 18th, 1995. These files are then indexed in two ways, by 1) topic [listing the daily files for each unique subject heading] and 2) content [listing the subject headings for each daily file].
The easiest access to the ROMARCH archives is through the World Wide Web. A list of the available archive files can be reached at the URL: http://classics.lsa.umich.edu/romarch.archive.html
In addition, threads of the best discussions and bibliographies have been collected on a separate page at the ROMARCH Web site: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~pfoss/thread.html
To retrieve archived messages via e-mail:
1)topic index - it's easy to retrieve an archive file in 2 steps:
a) To retrieve the list of unique TOPICS, send (with _only_ these
words & make sure TOPICS is in capital letters, otherwise you'll get an
error message) the command:
you will receive a list of topics arranged like so:
TOPIC FILE
ROMA: Roman dumped fills romarch.950418.3
ROMA: domestic cult romarch.950417.1
b) Then, if you wish (for instance) to retrieve the message about 'Roman dumped fills', you would send the command:
You will receive two messages in reply: one that confirms that the file is on its way, and the file itself. NOTE! A topic may contain messages in several different individual files; to get all the discussion about a topic, you should download _all_ the relevant files.
2)contents index - again, an easy 2 step process:
a) To retrieve the list of unique CONTENTS, send (with _only_ these
words & make sure CONTENTS is in capital letters, otherwise you'll get an error
message) the command:
you will receive a list of files arranged like so, with their topics listed beneath them:
romarch.950418.1:
ROMA: Re: *U.S. Epigraphy Project
romarch.950418.2:
ROMA: late roman cities
romarch.950418.3:
ROMA: Roman dumped fills
romarch.950418.4:
ROMA: brick and tile kilns
b) Again, if you wish to retrieve a particular message (e.g. about Roman dumped fills), you would send the command:
You will receive two messages in reply: one that confirms that the file is on its way, and the file itself.
