These walls form the northern side of the parodos or main
western entranceway into the lower part of the theatre, and
they originally supported the earthen embankment with the
seating.
There are in fact two parallel walls: the one on the right
(north) must have collapsed at some point (perhaps near the
end of the first century BC) and the more substantial wall
rning up the centre of the picture was built to support and
partially replace it. The plaster which coated the original
wall can still be seen between the two.
To the left (south) is a series of blocks from a substantial
wall on the other side of the passage. Several of them carry
the remains of painted decoration over the plaster
coating.
The floor is about 2.5 m below this level.
A continuation of this support wall towards the corner of
the theatre at the west will be seen in Trench 1S. In the
opposite direction, behind the photographer (to the centre
of the theatre) is Trench 1PQ.
This trench was excavated under the leadership of Marian
Melnyczek.
