Trench 1N

Anthoulla Vassiliades

Trench 1N, excavated in the 1996 and 1997 seasons, measures 3.5m x 2.5m and is located on the southern edge of the site close to the modern road. It was begun in order to find out if the end of a
column that was visible just at the surface, in the south east corner of the trench, was in situ, and how deep it went down.

The top layers of soil proved to be contaminated with modern rubbish and the area immediately north of column was found to be a rubbish pit which continued into the eastern baulk. In this area plastic was found all the way down to bedrock.

The column was exposed fully and found to be resting on a crumbly sandstone surface. It measured 1.73 m, not its full height, and it had been placed upside down. There is some fragmentary evidence for a wall, the function of which was unclear.

In the northern end of the trench is a floor surface defined by large and small pieces of irregular stone and it continues under the north baulk. In the southern end of the trench, opposite the column, a possible stairway has been found coming down from the western baulk.

We seem to have part of a cellar which cuts down into the Hellenistic and Roman levels, but its date
is difficult to define for the moment because of the modern activity. The trench needs to be extended
to gain a better understanding of the features found within it and its chronology.
