Trench 1T

Holly Cook

Trench 1T was located on the northern and western side of Grimm's trench. It was opened to investigate more of the area of the stage building. Root activity from the large, old terebinth tree slightly to its north caused a number of difficulties with the stratification.

As with other trenches in this area, there were some remains of medieval building activity, although they were less clear here. There were also good quantities of medieval pottery including several large fragments of a sgraffito plate. Below, the base of the front wall of the Roman stage-building continued, apparently a course higher here. So too did the terracotta pipe seen also in 1O and its Extension. Parallel to the wall to the south was another wall which included a re-used, plaster-coated cornice fragment, possibility derived from the Hellenistic stage building. So far, this wall seems unrelated to anything discovered in 1O.
As in Trench 1O, work was terminated at this level so as to leave investigation of the stage building for a separate campaign.
