The following describes the terms of the internship and the expectations and responsibilities of the parties to the agreement.

Course Formalities:

  1. The Intern must work a minimum of 140 hours during the semester (or applicable semester break) to earn six credit points for the unit ARIN3670.
  2. The Intern must enrol in ARIN3680. Please note, the Department will not process your result unless this agreement has been signed.
  3. The Intern understands that there will be no tests in this course and that a satisfactory course grade will be based on a final evaluation completed by the Employer and Internship Officer. A blank copy of the form for the work placement evaluation is available online. This form (the Completion Form) is also to be submitted to the Internship Officer no later than 2 weeks after the completion of the internship.
  4. The dates of your internship are to be communicated to the Internship Officer before you commence the placement.
  5. The Intern agrees to maintain email or telephone contact with the Internship Officer for the duration of the internship. The information provided to the Officer is to include, but is not limited to, work conditions, work satisfaction, and any changes in work dates or supervisory details.
  6. The Intern agrees to maintain an online journal during the duration of the internship.
  7. Professional conduct is crucial and any unethical behaviour could be grounds for a Fail. Non-conformance with this requirement is to be referred to the Chair of Department.
Expectations at Work:
  1. The Intern is expected to attend work regularly and adhere to the work schedule agreed upon with the Employer.
  2. The Intern agrees to abide by the rules and regulations set forth by the Employer and the department to which he or she is assigned. These rules and regulations, include, but are not limited to, confidentiality, access to information, safety and security.
  3. The Intern is expected to meet any human resources requirements established by the Employer for interns.
  4. The Intern is expected to dress appropriately for work and to meet the standards the Employer sets for regular employees.
  5. Separate to this agreement, the intern understands that the University provides insurance coverage that will adequately compensate him or her for any injury that is a result of his or her participation in the activities of internship. The Intern must provide proof of this insurance to the Employer.
  6. Under this agreement, the Intern will receive no financial compensation from the Employer. If there is any compensation of the Intern, it will be under a separate agreement between the Employer and the Intern. N.B. Once the Intern becomes a paid employee he/she is no longer covered by the University's insurance.
  7. The Intern understands that he or she is not entitled to employment by the Employer at the conclusion of the internship.
  8. The Intern may terminate the internship at any time with just cause - and - the approval of the Department. If termination is without good cause, the Department is under no obligation to provide another internship.
  9. If the Employer terminates the Internship for “just cause”, for example, absenteeism or failure to follow safety, security and other policies and procedures, the Intern will receive a failing grade of “F.” If the termination is not for just cause, for example, lack of work or company liquidation, the student must complete an internship elsewhere with the approval of the Internship Officer.
Department responsibilities
  1. The Internship Officer will be the liaison between the Department and the Employer and will provide information to the student on applying for internships and unit requirements (ARIN3670). The Officer will provide appropriate and varied work placement opportunities for all enrolled students.
  2. All internships must be approved by the Internship Officer before commencement.
  3. The Internship Officer will be responsible for tracking the Intern’s progress to ensure that he or she is meeting the requirements of the course and is obtaining the necessary training to justify the credit.
  4. The Department will designate a member of staff as the Academic Supervisor. The Academic Supervisor will be responsible for coordinating the work for the unit ARIN3680 Internship Project and assigning the mark for this work.
