ENGL6969 Semester 2, 2009

Stephen Sewell (”The Boys”), Christine Olsen (“Rabbit Proof Fence”), Louis Nowra (“Radiance”, “Cosi Cosi”) and Eleanor Witcombe (“The Getting of Wisdom”, “My Brilliant Career”) will be talking for three 2 hour sessions throughout Semester 2 on the inspiring trials and triumphs, the agonies and frustrations and tears and joys of creating their famous, award-winning screenplays, and answering your questions on how they did it. Emeritus Professor Dame Leonie Kramer, Professor of Australian Literature (1968- 1990) and Chancellor of the University (1991-2001), will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Letters at the University of Sydney graduation ceremony on Wednesday 8 April.

To celebrate this special occasion the English department, which Dame Leonie served for so many years with great distinction, will host an afternoon tea in her honour.

All four Professors of Australian Literature (Professor G.A. Wilkes, Professor Kramer, Professor Elizabeth Webby, and Professor Robert Dixon) will be together at this event and Professor Dixon, the current professor, will give a short address as a tribute to Dame Leonie. Family members, current and past members of staff and postgraduate students will also attend.

The afternoon tea would commence at 3.30 pm in the Woolley Common Room, John Woolley Building.

Poetry Prize Winner Announced!

David Herald Tribe award winner

The Department of English is pleased to announce the winner of the inaugural David Harold Tribe Poetry Award ($11,000): John Bennett for the poem 'Kitchen Music'.

John is a widely published poet, a former President of the Poets Union, and former winner of the Newcastle Prize. He has a PhD in poetics and has taught eco-philosophy at the University's Centre for Continuing Education. Last year he was the Sydney Harbour Artist of the Year and had an installation at the Macleay Museum, and works part time with the Sydney Health Projects Group in the School of Public Health

The award was presented by the donor Mr David Tribe at the Department of English postgraduate Creative Writing Salon in the Nicholson Museum, Thursday 30 October 2008.

Premier's Prize for William Christie

William Christie has won the NSW Premier's Prize for Literary Scholarship for his biography of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the British Romantic poet, philosopher and political thinker. Full story
