Postgraduate Study in the Department of English

The Department of English offers postgraduate coursework degree programmes in English, Creative Writing and Professional Communication. There are 300 students enrolled in these programmes. There are 120 students enrolled in postgraduate research degrees, mostly the PhD, for which we provide supervision across a wide range of specialisms.

Career opportunities for people with postgraduate qualifications in English are many and various.

MA and MLitt graduates have followed career paths or enhanced their professional development in secondary and TAFE education, libraries and archives, publishing, the media, and as policy-writers or speech-writers in the public service. Some Creative Writing students have become published writers during or after their candidature. Some coursework students go on to take research degrees.

Some of our PhD graduates follow similar professional routes. Others have gone on to further research as postdoctoral research fellows, or have been appointed to university lectureships.
