Professional Communication
Postgraduate Coursework 2010 Overview

Overview

Professional Communication is aimed at managers and professional workers whose jobs involve text and communication. The program teaches language and communication skills to a high level, using vocational applications of language in professional contexts. Students will improve their production and reception of spoken and written texts while developing a sophisticated understanding of the construction of meanings in social and multicultural contexts. The program focuses on text production (producing effective written and spoken texts in a range of professional contexts) and text reception (analysing a wide variety of texts relevant to professional communication practices).

Career Opportunities

The program offers a powerful tool for those working in professional, administrative or management sectors, both public and private, to enhance their career paths. For those aspiring to enter these fields, the program offers a strong basis for a future career.

Suggested Pathways

Pathways are a strategy for organising a program of study directed towards a specific area of interest or future employment. Students can design their own pathway in consultation with the Program Coordinator. The pathway examples shown below are suggestions only:
1. Communication for Professional Contexts, which focuses on communication skills and strategies applicable within professional and workplace contexts - in other words, matters of internal communication.
2. Public Communication, with a focus on communication issues which arise when considering an organisational or professional practice in relation to the community at large - in other words, communication which is externally focused.
3. International Communication, which considers an organisation or professional practice as a member of the international community.
