Honours

Honours in European Studies (EUST4014) can be taken as part of a combined honours degree. It allows students to undertake coursework and research leading to the production of an original work of scholarship in the form of a short thesis.

Entry requirements

The prerequisites are:

  • a credit average or better in 36 senior credit points in European Studies units; and
  • EITHER 12 advanced level credit points OR 24 introductory/intermediate credit points of a non-English European or Middle Eastern language.

Prerequisites and requirements may sometimes be waived but only by the Faculty on the recommendation of the Director.

Joint honours program

During the course of a joint honours year, students will take two units of study within EUST (to be chosen from the honours seminars offered by constituent departments), preferably one in first semester, the other in second (though some flexibility may be possible according to particular interests and unit of study offerings in any given year). Students must cover at least two of the European/Middle Eastern country/language areas with their choice of units.

Each unit of study will involve two contact hours per week, and each will be assessed by written assignments amounting to 5,000 words (although the precise distribution of the 5,000 words across exercises may vary according to the department offering the unit of study).

Students will also take two units of study within their other subject area. Assessments will be according to the offering department's requirements.

Finally, students will submit a thesis of 12,000-15,000 words on a topic within their joint honours subject areas.

The result for the EUST component of joint honours will be made up as follows: 60 per cent for the units of study (the two honours seminars, which are therefore worth 30 per cent each), and 40 per cent for the thesis.

Examples of joint honours theses topics

Joint honours in EUST and Economics, with a thesis on the economic effects of county X joining the European Monetary System.

Joint honours in EUST and Asian Studies, with a thesis on the influence of Japanese popular culture in European cinema.
