European Studies at the University of Sydney
At the University of Sydney, European Studies is a major within the Bachelor of Arts degree. Many of the subjects under the umbrella of European Studies have been taught here since the early days of the University’s foundation, and today we enrol hundreds of students annually in a wide range of units of study that explore the languages, history, literature, politics, economics, society and culture of the European nations. Students are also able to specialise in streams which include Medieval, Renaissance, Early Modern, Modern, and Contemporary Europe.
A unique feature of our program is that students can also include units taken in Middle Eastern subjects, reflecting a tradition of cultural and politico-economic interaction dating back to antiquity.
European Studies allows students to pursue their studies at senior level in two or more language/country areas within the field. In addition to language proficiency and cultural literacy, the program aims to cultivate in students advanced communication and analytical skills as well as a keen sense for approaching and solving problems. All our units of study stress the importance of acquiring these fundamental intellectual qualities with the objective of preparing students to be responsible citizens, effective leaders, and life-long learners.
The Faculty of Arts also offers majors and honours in the disciplines of Arabic and Islamic Studies and Hebrew, Biblical and Jewish Studies. Students wishing to specialise in these areas should consult these departments directly.
Registration
Students interested in European Studies should consult the Director at the earliest opportunity for advice on co-ordinating a program of study tailored to meet their individual needs and interests. Formal registration is done first with the Director, and then if necessary with the department/s from which students are selecting units of study. This is in addition to the normal University enrolment.
