Attendance at class

Most of the teaching in this department takes place in small groups and assessment is partly based on students' contribution to their group.

In most language levels the major emphasis is placed on skills of communication. Such skills can be neither developed nor evaluated unless students regularly attend classes. Therefore regular attendance is essential, not only for educational reasons but also from the point of view of assessment.

In most units a certain proportion of the marks is allotted to class participation. Students' attention is drawn to the following excerpt from the resolutions of the Academic Board dealing with attendance:

'The Dean of a Faculty, Director of a College or the Chairperson of a
Board of Studies may call upon any student in that Faculty or College or
under that Board of Studies who has been absent without leave from more
than ten percent of the classes in any one semester in a particular unit to
show cause why that student should not be deemed to have failed to complete
that unit.'

Whilst this department does not intend to apply this regulation literally, students consistently ignoring attendance requirements, especially in units with continuous assessment, may find themselves disqualified from gaining a pass in those units.

NOTE: It is the responsibility of students, after an absence from classes, to check on any important information that they may have missed. Whilst written work can be made up if deadlines are respected, absence from class means that no mark can be given for participation.
