Enrolment for undergraduate students

Enrolment into subjects takes place usually the month or so before the beginning of semester, and is done through the Faculty of Arts. Students will be sent information about specific details of enrolment procedures.

If you need assistance with what units to enrol in, please contact the undergraduate advisor or your year coordinator.

After students have enrolled in units of French with the Faculty of Arts, they must must also register with the department. This is generally during the first timetabled class or lecture for their unit. Information about when and where the first class is in each unit will be advertised in the orientation period, usually through your online timetable (accessible thorugh the My Uni site), or through a noticeboard near the administration office (level 5, room 506, Mungo MacCallum buidling).

Staff members are available to give advice in the University enrolment period (on enrolment day and Live! day) and information is also available on the Arts Faculty website.

Native speakers of French and other students with advanced language skills are asked to identify themselves when registering.

Quotas

The department is opposed to the notion of quotas in units, but staffing problems and planning difficulties may make some restrictions unavoidable. It may also be necessary to withdraw unit offerings, which attract too few students.

In either case, the student will be notified as soon as possible so other arrangements can be made.

Overlapping of units - content

Students cannot take any two units which overlap substantially in content. The department will advise students who may have completed units before 1998 as to their equivalents in terms of the units introduced subsequently.

Timetable clashes

If a student receives their timetable through the My Uni site, and they have two classes that are on a the same time, this is called a timetable clash. This will clearly be noted on their timetable printout.

During enrolment, there are student advisors from the student centre to help with sorting out these clashes. Contact the student centre, or the School of Languages and Cultures administrative office for more information.

Change of address or of name

Students are requested to inform the University Enrolment Office immediately if they change their address, telephone number or their name. Students can also change their address through My Uni.

Discontinuation

Students who intend to discontinue a unit or change their enrolment are requested to contact their Coordinator. You can also discontinue a unit though My Uni. In certain circumstances, it is possible to discontinue a unit without its being recorded as a failure. In all cases the Faculty must be informed officially of the decision to discontinue or to withdraw from a unit. All changes in enrolment, discontinuations etc must be made at Arts Faculty level as well as at departmental level.

Variations to enrolment, application for credit for previous study and advanced standing

Applications for exemption from departmental rules or from arrangements with respect to particular units (for example, the waiving of pre-requisites) should be referred to the undergraduate coordinator. Applications for credit and advanced standing must be submitted to the Arts Faculty.
