Guidelines used in the French department

  • The official deadline for an essay (or other written assignment) will be set in accordance with the requirements of the unit concerned.
  • Any student who requests an extension (for whatever reason) before the official deadline may be given an extension of time at the discretion of the staff member concerned.
  • In the interests of justice for all students, the University is concerned that adherence to deadlines and penalties for failure to meet them be evenly imposed by all departments and faculties. Departmental policy for major assignments is to deduct 5% for work that is up to 1 week late and 10% for work that is up to 2 weeks late, etc.
  • It must be stressed that under no circumstances can essays or exercises be accepted after the corrected work has been handed back. However, in special cases, consideration will be given to providing a last chance to earn some marks to any student who has not been able to meet the extended deadlines set out above. For example, at the discretion of the staff member concerned, such a student might be offered some form of examination.
  • Poorly presented work may not be accepted.
  • Students with documentation of illness of misadventure will not be penalised for late work, may be eligible for special consideration.
  • Assignments may not be faxed or emailed to the department unless by prior arrangement.
  • An extension or "last chance" as specified above, cannot be given, under the rules of the department, beyond 30 June in case of First Semester work, and 15 November in the case of Second Semester work. No member of staff is at liberty to make an exceptional arrangement with a student, but may apply to the year coordinator (if appropriate) or to the undergraduate coordinator in order to do so.
