Gender Studies

Why study Gender Studies?

What does it mean to "be a woman"? From modern girls to dykes, Alices to femocrats, is femininity anything more than a change of clothes?
What does it mean to "be a man"? From impeccably groomed metrosexuals to footy fans and fags, and wild men releasing their inner warrior in the forest, masculinity is diverse and changing.

Gender Studies allows students to explore how sex and gender are understood and lived in their own and other cultures, providing students with the tools to analyse a wide range of issues. The Department is committed to equipping students with research and writing skills that will assist in opening up a range of career prospects. The study of gender also profoundly enriches studies in the humanities and social sciences and provides an important complement to degrees specializing in law or legal studies, the sciences, the arts, government and policy-making, and international relations.

The tutorials and the whole process of writing made me think in a new way and about new things, and has consequently made me rethink my career... My professors in the Gender Studies Department...were inspiring.
