Louise Chappell researches and teaches in the area of human rights, gender and political institutions, and comparative Australian politics and policy. Her current research projects include an ARC funded project on the implementation of the gender provisions of the International Criminal Court as well as international collaborative research on Rethinking political institutions: integrating gender and neo-institutionalist perspectives. Louise has published widely in international and national journals including the International Political Science Review; Gender and Politics, Global Society, International Feminist Journal of Politics, Parliamentary Affairs, Australian Journal of Political Science, and the Australian Journal of Public Administration. Her book Gendering Government: Feminist Engagement with the State (UBC Press 2002) won the prestigious Victoria Schuck Award granted by the American Political Science Association in 2003 for the best book in the field of women and politics as well as the 2004 American Library Association Choice Award. Other books include The Politics of Women’s Interests, co-edited with Lisa Hill, (Routledge 2006) and No Fit Place for Women’? Women and Politics in New South Wales 1856-2006, co-edited with Deborah Brennan (UNSW Press 2006). Her latest book, The politics of human rights in Australia, co-authored with John Chesterman and Lisa Hill, will be published by Cambridge University Press in 2009. Louise is co-director of the Feminism and Institutionalism International Network which is based at Edinburgh University. In 2008 Louise held a visiting fellowship in the Department of Political Science at Leiden University, the Netherlands, and in 2005 was appointment as the Ruth Wynn Woodward Chair of Women’s Studies at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver. She regularly attends international conferences including the American Political Science Association and the European Consortium for Political Research. In the past three years she has been invited to present her research at leading universities in the United States, Canada, the UK, the Netherlands and Belgium. Louise has supervised students at Masters and PhD level in a range of areas including: women’s rights, children’s rights, humanitarian intervention, comparative Muslim women’s political organising and gender and the United Nations. |
