Michael Jackson is a political theorist. His undergraduate teaching concerns power, and other aspects of political theory including the search for the good life in utopia. In postgraduate programs he teaches ethics and leadership. His teaching and research have both earned recognition within and outside the university. He is the author of three books and more than seventy articles in international, refereed journals.

He is on the editorial committees of the American Review of Public Administration (USA), Hobbes Studies (Finland), Journal of Management History (UK), Journal of Value Inquiry (Netherlands), and Theoria (South Africa). He has served as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business, and Director of the University's Institute for Teaching and Learning, and is now Chair of Department
