Hebrew, Biblical and Jewish Studies covers a number of major areas – the Classical Hebrew language of the Tanach/Old Testament of the Bible, Bible studies, Modern Hebrew, Yiddish language and literature; and Jewish Civilisation, Thought and Culture.

Anyone can study Classical Hebrew, Modern Hebrew or Yiddish language. We assume no previous knowledge in any of these languages, so we have Beginners streams in both Classical and Modern Hebrew, as well as Intermediate/Advanced streams if you have studied HSC Hebrew or equivalent. Students are assessed individually to make sure they are placed in the most appropriate class for their level of knowledge and proficiency.

You can major in Classical Hebrew, Modern Hebrew, Yiddish, Jewish Civilisation, Thought & Culture, or Biblical Studies; and even pursue Fourth year honours study, subject to approval, in Classical Hebrew, Modern Hebrew, Biblical and Judaic Studies.

If you are interested in Ancient History, Archaeology or Studies of Religion, you will find units from Classical Hebrew, Biblical Studies and Jewish Civilisation, Thought & Culture to complement your studies. If you want to study History, Government or Politics, consider including units from Jewish Civilisation, Thought & Culture. You can also incorporate studies in Modern Hebrew or Judaic Studies with an Education degree (primary or secondary).

The Department of Hebrew, Biblical and Jewish Studies at the University of Sydney enjoys excellent support and can offer not only a very broad range of units of study, but also an active program of visiting speakers and guest lectures. Classes are designed as ‘learner-centred’, providing students with opportunities to practise both oral and written skills.
