Attendance

The department of Hebrew, Biblical and Jewish Studies interprets ‘satisfactory’ as attendance at a minimum of 75 per cent of all classes. Unless written evidence of illness, in the form of a medical certificate, or misadventure, in the form of a statement from University Counselling or another appropriate body, is furnished, students who attend less than 75 per cent of tutorials/lectures are liable to a penalty.

Students who attend less than 50 per cent of a unit of study will be deemed not to have fulfilled the requirements. Employment commitment is not a satisfactory reason for students missing classes.

In most language levels the major emphasis is placed on skills of communication. Such skills can be neither developed nor evaluated unless students regularly attend classes. Therefore regular attendance is essential, not only for educational reasons but also from the point of view of assessment.

It is the student’s responsibility, after an absence from classes, to check on any important information that may have been missed. Whilst written work can be made up if deadlines are respected, absence from class means that no mark can be given for participation.

As a courtesy, you should always let your lecturer know if you are going to be absent from class.
