Presentation of assessment
Presentation
Clear setting out and legibility are essential:
- write on one side of the paper only, with double spacing;
- typewritten/printed work is now standard. Only submit handwritten work if absolutely essential, and do not write in pencil;
- leave ample margins (for comments);
- pin or staple your sheets together securely at the top left-hand corner;
- attach a School of Languages assessment coversheet.
Bibliography
There are two main systems for setting out references: the Cambridge system and the Harvard system. While either system can be used in this department, the Cambridge system is preferred and is set out here as follows:
- All references listed in the bibliography must be in alphabetical order.
Books
Author, title, place of publication, publisher, date of publication. The title is in italics (or underlined if you do not have that facility). There should be a colon after the place and a comma after the publisher's name and a full stop at the end.
- Amsel, Nachum The Jewish Encyclopedia of Moral and Ethical Issues New Jersey: Jason Aronson, 1996.
- Brasch, R. The Judaic Heritage: Its Teachings, Philosophy and Symbols New York: David McKay, 1969.
- Diamant, A. and Cooper, H. Living a Jewish Life: Jewish Traditions, Customs and Values for Today’s Families New York: Harper Perennial, 1991.
Articles
If you are quoting from an article, state the author, title of the article in single quotation marks, title of journal in italics (or underlined), volume, number/part, date and page references.
Chapter in book with separate author
If you are quoting from an chapter, state the author, title of the chapter in single quotation marks, editor, title of book in italics (or underlined), place of publication, publisher, date of publication.
Websites
If quoting or using information from a website, you must provide as much information as possible, including the website address, and the date and time you accessed the web. You must not copy straight from a website without providing a reference as this is plagiarism.
Footnotes
The same system is followed for the first time you refer to a piece of work. However you must include the actual page reference, author’s first name, and then surname: viz: Nahum Amsel…
If you refer to the same reference for a second time, you only need to state Ibid, but if you have to refer to a different page, you must give the new page reference after the Ibid.
If you refer to the same work later in the text, you give the author’s surname only plus a short title.
How to quote
DO NOT USE ITALICS! For short quotations, use single quotation marks and provide the page number. Only use double quotation marks when a quotation is included within a quotation.
For longer quotations (2-3 lines or more), indent the quote and do not use quotation marks.
