Undertaking Heritage Studies

You can choose to take a major in Heritage Studies if you are enrolled in an Arts degree, or your degree resolutions permit this. You can also just take a selection of subjects in Heritage Studies.

Students intending to complete a major in Heritage Studies can include units of study from archaeology, history, art history and anthropology in their major. There are no junior (ie. first year) units of study. The prerequisite to enter the Heritage Studies program is the successful completion of 18 junior credit points. The Heritage Studies (HRTG) major consists of 36 senior credit points including HRTG2601 and at least 12 other credit points of Heritage Studies. The remaining credit points may be made up from the approved cross-listed units. Contact Dr Annie Clarke for further details or check the list of cross-listed units located on the Faculty of Arts web site.

All of the Heritage Studies units of study take an interactive and research-centred approach to learning and teaching. Field trips to Heritage places and museums are a core component of each unit of study. Site managers, curators, conservators, museum educators and heritage specialists from a range of NSW cultural institutions all generously give of their time and expertise in the form of lectures and guided tours to provide students with some exposure to how heritage is managed, conserved and presented.

Each unit of study has an assessment task that involves students in carrying out an individual research project that aims to build research skills and a knowledge base relevant to the practice of heritage conservation and museology.
