Admission requirements for postgraduate study (Research)
To enrol in a postgraduate research program in the History department, you need to have completed a Bachelor of Arts degree with a good Honours grade (I or II.1) in History, or a Masters of Arts degree with a good distinction average in History (nb. the Master of Arts [Research] is an exception).

Your admission is at the discretion of the Department of History and the Faculty of Arts.

Application dates
Applications for Semester 1 enrolment generally close at the end of October of the preceding year, but applications after this deadline will be accepted. Application forms are generally available through the Faculty office from the end of September. Admission closing dates also apply to current students upgrading their candidature.

NB: The History department also allows students to enrol for second semester entry. The closing date is generally the end of April. You should check with the Faculty office and/or the History department before making such an application.

Admission procedures
There are two aspects to your application for admission to a postgraduate research program in the History. You must approach:

  • the Arts Faculty Office
  • the History Department (through the Research Studies Co-ordinator)

Arts Faculty Office Admission
Regardless of the postgraduate research program to which you are applying, you must lodge the appropriate application form with the Faculty of Arts office. Applicants should note that original evidence of their academic record and citizenship or residency status will be required at the time of lodgement. Photocopies of academic records will only be accepted if they have been officially signed and certified as true copies of the original by the issuing institution.

Alternatively, original documents with photocopies may be presented at the Faculty office for sighting. A birth certificate or passport with photocopies certified by a Justice of the Peace or by the Faculty office will be accepted as proof of Australian citizenship or permanent residency.

Applicants who do not have citizenship or residency status should apply for admission through the International Office.

Further Information

The History Department (through the Postgraduate Research Co-ordinator)
As a potential postgraduate research student your most important task is to identify and make contact with a possible supervisor for your thesis. This means talking to a History staff member in your own area of study. You will also need to prepare a 1000 project proposal.
