History Department Response to Student Feedback
HSTY3684 - Cultures of Empire (2006)

Unit Coordinator: Dr Kirsten McKenzie

This course received a 67% agree and 33% neutral rating on overall satisfaction, with no students disagreeing about satisfaction with its overall quality. These figures in some senses reflect a disjuncture between expectations of students and the content of the course. There was a general sense within the class of interest in Australian research topics, despite no seminar discussions being explicitly focused on Australian topics. More Australian content is clearly desirable in this course and this will be pursued when it is extensively revised and offered at Honours level in 2008. The guest presentations were popular and students were pleased with the opportunity to hear about the work of scholars overseas. Workload was generally felt to be what was expected of an advanced unit but it was clear that the demands placed on students by changes in curriculum meant that some of the reading lists in seminars should be cut back. This course will be revised, adapted and offered at Honours level in 2008 which will address the issue of student workloads. It will also involve more Australian content in its revised form.
