Attendance at class
All students enrolled in units of study in the Faculty of Arts need to be aware that it is Faculty policy that students who miss more than 10 per cent of the class hours for any given unit of study can be 'deemed to have failed to complete' that unit, unless they can 'show cause' to justify their absences.
In all Indonesian units of study students are allowed only 10 per cent non-attendance before the 'class attendance and participation' component of your marks is reduced (even if you participate actively when you are present). In accordance with Faculty policy, if you miss more than 10 per cent of classes, you must 'show cause' (such as a doctor’s certificate for illness, or pre-arranged permission to be absent for some reason), otherwise you can be deemed 'not to have completed' the unit.
However, if you miss more than 50 per cent of classes, for whatever reason, including illness, work commitments or timetable clashes, you are considered not to have completed the unit of study requirements. In this case, you will normally receive a grade of AF ‘Absent Fail’. In other words, you should not be enrolled if you cannot expect to fulfil this basic requirement.
Of course no-one knows when a prolonged bout of illness or other misadventure is going to occur. If illness does mean you fall below the 50 per cent attendance requirement, you should withdraw from the course to prevent an AF grade on your academic record. If you miss the deadline for withdrawal, you should make a special application for permission to discontinue after the due date for withdrawals. Discuss this first with the
Non-attendance at tests conducted in class can pose particular problems. You should be aware that because Indonesian units of study rely on the availability of part-time teachers who are not paid to work outside the scheduled class hours, speaking tests cannot normally be re-scheduled outside the times designated for these tests at the beginning of semester. So it is important to plan ahead!
If an illness prevents you from attending for any scheduled test, you must notify the chair of department within two working days of the test to see whether other arrangements can be made. Please be aware that our very limited staffing resources places great strain on our ability to reschedule tests to suit your own preferences. In the case of documented illness or misadventure, we will do our best to reschedule, as far as it is possible. However please do not expect us to reschedule tests for other reasons
