Honours in Italian

An Honours degree is rapidly becoming the norm rather than the exception in the Faculty of Arts. To be eligible to enter Italian IV Honours, students must have qualified for the award of the pass degree with a major in Italian Studies (36 credit points) and have completed an additional 12 senior credit points in Italian, normally including ITLN3691 or other units - including exchange units - as approved by the department. Intending Honours students should attain a credit average result in senior Italian units taken as part of their major.

When you have completed your Pass degree (144 credit points in Arts), you can apply to enrol in Italian IV Honours (ITLN4001). This opportunity is also open to graduates in Italian from other universities who have performed at an appropriate standard and to students who have completed prerequisites in the Diploma of Language Studies.

In Italian IV (Honours), students complete four honours level options and undertake a program of supervised research that is written up as a 12-15,000 extended essay. They meet with their supervisors once a fortnight, as well as attending the department's weekly research seminar.

You can also enrol for Joint Honours. We have had successful candidates in Italian and French, Italian and English, Italian and Art History and Theory, Italian and Government, and other combinations could be proposed (History, Linguistics, Archaeology). It is also possible to count honours-level units from other departments towards Honours in Italian.

Applications are normally due at the end of October (but may be considered until the beginning of Semester 1) and you should discuss your proposed thesis topic with the Honours Coordinator as soon as possible.

Honours is a full-time load for one year, or a half-time load for two-years. You can also apply to the Faculty of Arts to combine one full-time semester with two half-time semesters.
