Overview of possible program streams

Overview

The Italian Studies program is designed to bring both beginners and advanced students to a high level of linguistic competence combined with a sound knowledge of Italian literature and culture. All units are language based and deal with material in Italian. Language acquisition classes are conducted in Italian from Week 1; for other specialist units, the individual lecturers indicate in the unit outline the language that will be used in class.

The range of specialist units rotates from year to year. The topics presently covered range from Dante to Cyberspace: poetry, drama, fiction, film and philosophy, translating and writing, sociolinguistics and dialects.

There are three entry levels: complete beginners; students who have completed Italian Beginners at HSC; and students who have completed Italian Continuers at HSC.

Students from all streams can qualify for Study Abroad, complete a major in Italian, or enter the honours program by completing the appropriate sequence of units.

A major in Italian consists of 36 Senior credit points of Italian.

First year Italian - which unit should I enrol in?

Introductory stream: Complete beginners, or students who have completed less than 2 years of high school Italian, enrol in ITLN1611 Introductory Italian 1

Intermediate stream: Students who have completed Italian Beginners at HSC enrol directly into the senior unit, ITLN2611 Intermediate Italian 3.

Advanced stream: Students who have completed Italian Continuers at HSC enrol directly into the senior unit ITLN2631 Senior Italian 3.

Students who do not fall easily into one of the above categories, including advanced and native speakers of Italian, should contact the coordinators of the relevant units and may be asked to take a placement test.

Majoring in Italian

A major in Italian (introductory stream) will normally include at least ITLN3611.

A major in Italian (intermediate stream) will normally include at least ITLN3611 or ITLN2632.

A major in Italian (advanced stream) will normally include at least ITLN2632.

Cross-listed units

Under Faculty regulations, students can cross-list up to 18 credit points towards their major. However, the Italian Studies department recommends a maximum of two cross-listed units (12 credit points).

Bachelor of Arts (Advanced)

BA (Advanced) students should identify themselves to the chair of department as early as possible. If you already have advanced Italian language skills, it may be appropriate to enter senior thematic units in your first year.

Bachelor of Liberal Studies

Students in the BLibStuds are required to complete 18 senior credit points of language study. Any senior ITLN unit meets the 'language study' requirement, not only the language acquisition units.

Combined programs of study

Options for non-Bachelor of Arts and non-university students

If you are enrolled at another tertiary institution, you can enrol in units of study offered by Italian Studies and count them towards your degree subject to permission from your home institution.
Cross-Institutional study

If you want to study Italian without completing a full Bachelor degree, you can enrol in the Diploma of Language Studies.

If you are interested in studying one or more units for personal interest, see information on Non-Award study.
