Scholarships and Prizes

There are a number of scholarships and prizes available for students studying Italian, including:

University prizes

  • Beatrice Moran Memorial Prize in Third Year Italian
    Awarded for proficiency in 3000-level units of Italian.
  • Countess E M Freehill Prize No 1 for First Year Italian
    Awarded for proficiency in 1000-level units of Italian, conditional on attending at least two 2000-level units in next semester.
  • Countess E M Freehill Prize No 2 for Second Year Italian
    Awarded for proficiency in in 2000-level units of Italian, conditional on attending at least two 3000-level units in next semester.
  • Rosina Tedeschi Memorial Prize for Italian Conversation
    For greatest improvement in Italian conversation in 1000-level courses.

The Merenda Scholarships

In 2009 two annual scholarships were established to support study in Italy. They are available to 2nd or 3rd year undergraduate students who are currently enrolled in an Italian Studies major, and who are taking up an approved exchange place at an Italian University; or to postgraduate students enrolled in Italian Studies who intend to travel to Italy to pursue further study or research for their degree program. Marion Macaulay Bequest Scholarships

The Marion Macaulay Bequest Scholarships offer financial assistance for overseas study to students enrolled in either the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Education. These are awarded on the students proposed program of study and how it relates to the applicant's intended career. Application forms and referee's reports are available from the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Education

University of Sydney Honours Scholarships

Each year the University of Sydney offers a number of Honours Scholarships, each worth $6000. These scholarships are available to students enrolled in degrees that require an extra year of study for the award of honours. All local students are eligible, including those students who completed their undergraduate degree at a university other than Sydney.

Italian Government scholarships

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is offering scholarships for the current academic year to Australian citizens. The scholarships can be allocated long term (one academic year, 9 - 12 months) or short term (minimum 3 months).
