Study in Japan

The Faculty of Arts maintains exchange programs with universities throughout Japan including several of the country’s top public and private institutions. Through these programs, majors in Japanese Studies can study for a semester or, in some cases, even a whole year in Japan and receive academic credit at USYD without paying extra for tuition. Exchange can be done as early as the first semester of the second year so students should begin planning early.

The complete list of universities with whom we maintain exchange programs is available from the International Office. Please enquire with them regarding application procedures, deadline, fees and scholarships. For information on specific universities, please feel free to ask your instructors and check the individual university websites.

Answers to some FAQs about studying in Japan

Is it possible to work in Japan while on a student visa?
Depending on visa status, you may be eligible to work a limited number of hours each week.

Is studying in Japan expensive?
Room and board can be expensive in Japan but many universities have student dorms and apartments that are very affordable. Also, outside of Tokyo, the cost of living can be considerably lower than Sydney.
