Majoring in Japanese Studies

Students can major or minor in Japanese Studies and the curriculum can be integrated into other degree programs such as Arts, Commerce and Law. Besides linguistic and cultural literacy, the program aims to cultivate superior writing and analytical skills as well as a keen sense for approaching and solving problems. All our units of study stress the importance of acquiring these fundamental intellectual qualities with the objective of preparing students to be responsible citizens, effective leaders, and life-long learners.

Japanese majors are encouraged to study for a semester or even a whole year in Japan through one of the many exchange programs we maintain with some of Japan’s most prestigious universities. University scholarships are available.

High achieving students can pursue advanced studies on Japanese history, literature, language, and society through the fourth-year Honours program where they undertake coursework and research leading to the production of a substantial work of scholarship.

Current or prospective students interested in studying Japanese history or culture without gaining language proficiency should consider Asian Studies.
