Pearl Beach Papuanists' Workshop 2006
Workshop on Papuan Linguistics
October 27-29, 2006
Crommelin Field Station, Pearl Beach, NSW
The current plan is to have the arranged transport leave Sydney at around 4 or 5 o'clock in the afternoon. We'll finish up on Sunday at about the same time. I'll put a program up right after the 1st of October when everyone sends their abstracts in.
We are currently receiving titles and abstracts of papers and are open for registration of participants.
Papers should be either 20 mins or 40 mins long and on a topic related to Papuan languages or linguistics.
Deadline for submission of titles and abstracts is October 1.
The conference proceedings will be published by the Australian Journal of Linguistics. Please indicate whether you would like your paper to be considered for inclusion in the proceedings when you submit your abstract.
About The Workshop
The Pearl Beach Papuanists' Workshop will be held at the Crommelin Field Station at Pearl Beach, about 60 km north of Sydney, from Friday the 27th of October to Sunday the 29th of October. The workshop is hosted by the Linguistics Department of Sydney University.
The Papuanists' Workshop is modelled on the very successful Blackwood workshops for Australianists that have been running for the past five years. The atmosphere will be very informal. Everyone with an interest in Papuan languages is invited to give a paper, from Honours students to field workers to professors.
Costs are minimal. There will be an accommodation cost of $15 per night for those staying at Crommelin Field Station. There will also be a cost of around $35 per person to cover all meals over the weekend (we will work out the exact food cost once we've done the shopping).
The number of participants is limited to 35, so you should register your interest in attending straight away to avoid missing out. Crommelin has sleeping space for only 26 people. Others will have to find alternative accommodation in the area. There are lots of holiday houses in walking distance of Crommelin (e.g. on Crystal Ave); see Pearl Beach Real Estate for more information.
Updates will be posted to this website as arrangements are finalised. Check back here for more information later. Once you register, updates will be e-mailed to you directly. To register, write to James McElvenny at jmc followed by the at sign and then student.usyd.edu.au

What to Bring
- If you're sleeping at Crommelin then you should bring towels, sheets or a sleeping bag, a pillowcase and, if you really feel the cold, extra blankets.
- A mug for tea and coffee. This reduces the washing up, since you can reuse your own mug a few times without having to wash it up.
- The mugs at Crommelin are also pretty gross.
- If you have a passion for a particular delicacy, e.g. decaf coffee, caviar, truffles etc, then you should bring your own.
Transport
We will try to organise a car pool from Sydney University to Crommelin on the Friday. More information will be posted later. Below is some information on various transport options to and from Sydney Airport, Sydney University Linguistics Department and Crommelin. This information is taken directly from the 2006 Blackwood site.
1. Getting to the Transient Building
Building F12, University of Sydney, Camperdown campus.
Check out the University of Sydney map.
For Taxis:
Transient Building's closest campus entrance is on City Road.
Ask at the gate for directions. It is at the T-junction of Physics
and Fisher Roads.
From the City
Take buses 422, 423, 426 & 428 along Castlereagh Street or in front of
Central Railway Station. Click here for bus information and maps
Sydney Airport Transport information
Our suggestion:
- for one person travelling light: the train or the airport shuttle, followed by a taxi or bus to Transient.
- for more than one person, or one person with a lot of luggage: taxi.
A taxi from the airport to the Transient and nearby hotels costs less than Aus$30.
The train from the airport to Central costs $12 and a taxi from there to the department is about $12 depending on traffic.
The financially prudent can take the train from the airport to Central Station, then walk ca. 8 minutes to the bus station (shelter shaped like fishbones). (The quickest way is through the upper level of the station (Country trains), not along Eddy Avenue). The second stop on the opposite side of the shelter from Central Station is where the buses that go along City Road to Sydney University go (e.g. 422). Get off at the footbridge at the Wentworth Building (corner of City Road and Butlin Avenue) and then walk across the road into the University. Take the first real left (west) after the carpark, and then turn right (north) at the T junction. You should be on Fisher Rd. The Transient Building is an old fibro-cement building on the right (east). Not recommended with heavy bags or jet lag.
2. Getting from Central to Pearl Beach
General public transport and rail
This website has detailed directions for getting to Pearl Beach and an irrelevant place
called Valedon.
