Master of Applied Linguistics
Linguistics – the study of language structure and language use – has important applications in a number of fields, including Education, particularly the learning and teaching of second and foreign languages but also literacy education, translating and interpreting, intercultural communication, language management and evaluation, communication for specific purposes, and language policy and planning.
The following aspects make the study of Applied Linguistics at Sydney unique:
- The department is internationally renowned for its strengths in language analysis and language description on the one hand, and in discourse analysis and sociolinguistics, on the other. We have combined these strengths in an innovative Applied Linguistics curriculum with a strong theoretical and methodological grounding in the field.
- An empirical approach to Applied Linguistics where students will need to collect, analyze, and interpret data in most units is matched by a critical approach, which continuously challenges students to explore the social and political applications and implications of their linguistic theory and practice.
- Unlike many other postgraduate programs in Applied Linguistics we do not focus exclusively on TESOL and language teaching. Rather, our focus is on the broader social and political contexts of language use, which will prepare students for language-related work in corporate, government, and institutional contexts in Australia and internationally.
- A broad spectrum of related programs and units in cross-cultural communication, professional communication, translating and interpreting, modern languages, education, and media studies allow students of Applied Linguistics to tailor a part of their program to suit their individual interests.
