Master of Arts (MA) in Applied Linguistics
Designed for those interested in applying linguistics in educational and other professional areas. Applied linguistics is also a rapidly developing field in its own right. The courses are taught in the evenings, allowing many students to work part-time. It is possible to complete the course in a year by doing 4 units per semester, but many people prefer to spread it over more than one year.
This is suitable for those interested in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), second language teaching (SLT), and the teaching of modern languages, particularly Korean and Japanese. The latter are taught jointly with the School of Asian Studies.
In keeping with recent trends in Applied Linguistics and particularly Language Teaching, the MA programme was recently redesigned with a view to enhancing its diversity and interdisciplinarity. We are now offering two newly developed units of study, namely 7272 Additional Language Learning and 7273 Additional Language Teaching, which will be offering a contemporary up-to-date introduction to the fields of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), SLT (Second Language Teaching), ESL (English as a Second Language), the learning and teaching of LOTE (Languages other than English) and Modern Languages generally. Additionally, students can choose from a variety of courses offered by the various Modern Languages and Education departments in the University of Sydney.
The program consists of eight units. The Compulsory core units are: 7001 Language Analysis, 7002 Sociolinguistics, 7272 Additional Language Learning, and 7273 Additional Language Teaching, with the remaining units chosen from a wide range of electives.
Entry Requirements
Candidates must hold a BA degree of the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification from elsewhere. Candidates should also have (1) a professional qualification (e.g. a DipEd or DipTESOL), and (2) at least three full years of relevant professional experience. In special circumstances, the professional qualification may be waived, or a lesser period of professional experience may be acceptable.
Intake
Applicants are admitted in February and July.
Master of Arts (MA) in Cross-cultural Communication
Cross-cultural Communication is a rapidly growing field of study, as people realise the difficulty and importance of understanding what other people, especially from other societies, say and do. In today's globalized and multicultural societies, cross-cultural communication is common enough. Even so, it continues to be a challenge, both for people who engage in cross-cultural communication on a daily basis, and for researchers trying to describe and understand it. Students will learn about linguistic and discourse-analytic approaches to studying cross-cultural communication. There is a strong focus to the social positionings of participants in an interaction, and the ways how social relationships (particularly of power and intimacy) between participants are reflected in their linguistic practices.
This degree is a postgraduate degree program for those interested in learning about cross-cultural communication, especially with respect to the workplace, educational and other professional areas.
