ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Candidates for the MPhil must hold a BA (Honours) or an MA awarded with merit from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification from elsewhere.
Candidates who do exceptionally well may apply to upgrade from MPhil to PhD with Departmental approval after the completion of their first year of candidature.
INTAKE
Applicants are admitted in February and July.
METHOD OF PROGRESSION
Research and thesis
For local candidates, the PhD degree can be undertaken on either a full-time or part-time basis. For full-time PhD candidates the minimum period is three years and the maximum is five years. For part-time PhD candidates the minimum period is usually three years and the maximum is seven years.
International students are required to be enrolled as full-time candidates.
The thesis topic must be approved by the Department. Members of staff act as supervisors.

Successful applicants are usually admitted on one year's probation, in which case the candidature will be confirmed subject to satisfactory completion of the first year.

Applicants are advised to contact prospective supervisors and the Postgraduate Research Coordinator before they apply. A list of academic staff and their research interests is available here.

Contact the Department of Linguistics as above to discuss your plans.
Step 2
Submit a formal application by completing and submitting the appropriate application form. Also submit a 5 page research proposal detailing your intended research. (If the results of your first degree won't be known by the closing date, apply anyway, and forward your results when you know them.)
For local applicants, (i.e. citizens and permanent residents of Australia) the closing date is usually mid October (for a February start) or the end of April (for a July start). Application forms are available from the Faculty of Arts Office.
