Crosscultural Communication
Postgraduate Coursework 2010 Overview

Overview

Crosscultural and intercultural communication are exciting fields of study in today’s globalised world. Communication between people from different societies has become very important in most areas of life, including business, marketing and advertising, diplomacy, media, tourism, government and non-government organisations. The Master of Crosscultural Communication has been designed for those working or wantng to work in these sectors. The program provides an introduction to potential pitfalls in communication across cultures, but its main focus is on the immense creative potential of the area, and on the management of communication through an understanding of language.

Students will develop the tools to analyse intercultural communication on the basis of a sound grounding in how language works, and in how societies and cultures differ. They then follow pathways ranging from translating to conflict resolution, media, cultural studies, religious communication, political economy, visual communication and professional communication, or the study of particular societies, or may focus on a research project. Location in the heart of Sydney’s multilingual community provides ample opportunities for hands-on research.
