Internship Agreement between:
(Name of Intern) _________________________________
and:
Department of Media & Communications (Name of Internship Coordinator) _____________________
The following describes the terms of the internship and the expectations and responsibilities of the parties to the agreement.
Intern Responsibilities
- The Intern must sign this agreement and enrol in MECO3671. Please note: the Department will not process your grade unless this agreement has been signed. Keep your own copy on file.
- The Intern must work a minimum of 140 hours (20 days) during the semester (or applicable semester break) to earn six credit points for MECO3671.
- The Intern understands that there will be no tests in this course and that a satisfactory grade will be based on a final evaluation completed by the Employer and Internship Coordinator. A blank copy of the Completion Form for the work placement evaluation is available online. This Completion Form must be submitted to the Internship Coordinator as soon as possible after the internship is finished.
- The Intern must give the Internship Coordinator details of the internship duration and work dates before starting the placement.
- The Intern agrees to maintain email or telephone contact with the Internship coordinator for the duration of the internship. The information provided to the Coordinator will include, but is not limited to, work conditions, work satisfaction, and any changes in work dates or supervisory details.
- The Intern agrees to submit a reflective journal as detailed in the MECO3671 unit of study outline. The Intern understands that the journal is to be submitted to the Internship Coordinator no later than 2 weeks after completion of the internship.
Expectations at Work:
- Professional conduct is crucial and any unethical behaviour by the Intern could be grounds for a fail grade. Non-conformance with this requirement is to be referred to the Department Chair.
- The Intern is expected to attend work regularly and adhere to the work schedule agreed upon with the Employer.
- The Intern agrees to abide by the rules and regulations set forth by the Employer and the department to which he or she is assigned. These rules and regulations, include, but are not limited to, confidentiality, access to information, safety and security.
- The Intern is expected to meet any human resources requirements established by the Employer for interns.
- The Intern is expected to dress appropriately for work and to meet the standards the Employer sets for regular employees.
- Separate to this agreement, the Intern understands that the University provides insurance coverage that will adequately compensate him or her for any injury that is a result of his or her participation in the activities of internship. The Intern must provide proof of this insurance to the Employer.
- Under this agreement, the Intern will receive no financial compensation from the Employer. If there is any compensation of the Intern, it will be under a separate agreement between the Employer and the Intern. N.B. Once the Intern becomes a paid employee he/she is no longer covered by the University's insurance.
- The Intern understands that he or she is not entitled to employment by the Employer at the end of the internship.
- The Intern may terminate the internship at any time with just cause - and - the approval of the Department. If termination is without good cause, the Department is under no obligation to provide another internship.
- If the Employer terminates the Internship for “just cause”, for example, absenteeism or failure to follow safety, security and other policies and procedures, the Intern will receive a fail grade of “F.” If the termination is not for just cause, for example, lack of work or company liquidation, the student must complete an internship elsewhere with the approval of the Internship Coordinator.
Department responsibilities
- The Internship Coordinator will be the liaison between the Department and the Employer and will provide information to the student on applying for internships and unit requirements (MECO3671 and 3672). The Coordinator will provide appropriate and varied work placement opportunities for all enrolled students.
- All internships must be approved by the Internship Coordinator before commencement.
- The Internship Coordinator will be responsible for tracking the Intern’s progress to insure that he or she is meeting the requirements of the course and is obtaining the necessary training to justify the credit.
- The Department will designate a member of staff as the Academic Supervisor. The Academic Supervisor will be responsible for coordinating the work for the unit MECO3672 Internship Project and assigning the mark for this work.
