Forms, Policy and Submission
Code of practice
A code of practice for supervision of postgraduate research students outlines the responsibilities of the university, the faculty, the department, the supervisor, and of the candidate.
Forms
The Arts Faculty Postgraduate Forms web page contains a great deal of information for current postgraduate students.
Notice of Thesis Submission (including Submission of Thesis guidelines)
Candidates in the faculty initiate the submission process by putting in a Notice of Thesis Submission form
This form contains information about the binding and layout of the thesis. An abstract is required. Intention to submit electronically must be discussed in advance of submission.
Information on the submission process for PhD, Darts and Masters coursework is described in the current Postgraduate Handbook:
http://www.usyd.edu.au/handbooks/arts_PG/04_general_info_policies.shtml
Read the section ‘Submission of Higher Degree Theses’
Citation Style
The Department does not enforce a particular citation style on Postgraduate research theses. The only requirement is that any citation style is applied uniformly and consistently. Harvard, APA and to some extent MLA are used in the field of media and communications most commonly. It is not recommended to invent your own system.
See the Library Citation and Style Guides page at http://www.library.usyd.edu.au/subjects/readyref/citing.html
Declarations
Not required by policy, but preferred. In the Media And Communications Dept. the following will suffice.
ON TITLE PAGE: Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the
Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Department of Media and Communications,
University of Sydney
FOLLOWING TITLE PAGE:
Certification of Authorship/Originality
I certify that the work in this thesis has not previously been submitted for a degree nor has it been submitted as part of requirements for a degree except as fully acknowledged within the text. I also certify that the thesis has been written by me. Any help that I have received in my research work and the preparation of the thesis itself has been acknowledged. In addition, I certify that all information sources and literature used are indicated in the thesis.
Include information on Human Ethics approval information (if relevant).
Signature of Candidate
This declaration is intended to cover issues arising from collaborative work or thesis by publication regarding:
- The sources from which information is derived;
- The human and ethical approvals obtained;
- What use has been made of the work of others;
- The amount of work the candidate claims as original; and
- Where publications are included, evidence that identifies the work as that of the candidate.
If you feel an area is not sufficiently covered, amend the declaration.
Recommendation and Award of Degrees
Once all of the reports have been received by the Faculty, they are forwarded to the Postgraduate Research Director for their recommendation and to the candidate's supervisor for their information. The PG Director writes a recommendation in consultation with the candidate’s supervisor. The candidate has a formal right of reply. The recommendation and any letter from the candidate go to the Faculty of Arts Postgraduate Committee who make a recommendation, and then to the University committee for their approval.
