Postgraduate Coursework 2010 Overview

 

Overview

 
Media Practice focuses on media industry practice, including the areas of writing for media, media liaison, broadcast and online journalism skills, ethical and legal issues in the media, and theories of mass communication. Students will develop their written and spoken communication skills and their production skills in print and broadcast media contexts. They will develop a sophisticated understanding of media production and reception.

Career opportunities exist for all aspects of journalism, particularly content production for print, radio, television, online and convergent media.

These are elective unit suggestions for students wishing to work in online media as content producers, providing production skills together with some knowledge of the broadcast media that have converged online, as well as knowledge of the internet context and its cultural implications.

Broadcast Journalism

These are elective unit suggestions for students wishing to work in television and radio as reporters, producers, researchers and editors. These electives provide the fundamental production skills of broadcast journalism together with broad knowledge of the broadcast media industry, its relation to the internet and the challenges and opportunities of convergence.

Higher Degree Research Pathway

If you are interested in the option of continuing your coursework studies into research, as an M.Phil or Ph.D candidate, and have not completed an honours degree, you may qualify by enrolling in the two dissertation units listed below (MECO 6904 and MECO 6905). These require a 12,000 word dissertation completed across two semesters and are subject to the availability of a supervisor. Students seeking entry into higher degree research also need to have achieved a distinction minimum in all subjects. You may also enrol in the dissertation units if you are interested in doing a longer research project, without any intention of continuing as a research candidate.
