Penny O’Donnell joined the Department of Media and Communications in 2008 following her appointment as a Senior Lecturer in International Media and Journalism. She is developing and teaching MECO 6926 International Media Practice, a new core unit in the department’s postgraduate program. Her research interests include global media and communication, journalism studies, media and cultural literacies, and media and multiculturalism. Her publications include two monographs, a co-authored book and two edited collections of conference papers, several book chapters and numerous articles. From 1998 to 2007, Penny held a Senior Lectureship in the Journalism Program at the University of Technology, Sydney, and achieved national recognition for her creative approach to teaching journalism studies. Prior to this, she had a successful career in radio journalism, culminating as a producer on ABC Radio National’s breakfast program. She has also worked extensively in book publishing, community radio and newswire reporting in Australia, Mexico and Nicaragua. She is currently co-convenor with Dr Tanja Dreher (UTS) and Dr Justine Lloyd (Macquarie) of The Listening Project, a research program exploring the politics, technologies and practices of listening sponsored by the ARC Cultural Research Network.

  • 'From Rivers of Gold to the Clickstream: Newspapers and Quality Journalism in the Internet'
  • This project will enhance Australian democracy by providing a scholarly basis for public discussion about the ways that quality journalism can survive in the Internet age. It will create knowledge about the specifically Australian experience of newspapers' transition to online media services and will thus help Australian citizens and journalists engage in global debates about journalism futures. It will create knowledge about the workplace conditions that foster quality journalism. It will showcase Australian research in international scholarly debate within the field of Journalism Studies.
