| The department of Modern Greek focuses on post-classical Greek language and culture, with a historical and geographical range from the end of the ancient world to contemporary Greece, Cyprus and the world-wide Greek diaspora, including Australia. The department of Modern Greek offers students a stimulating environment in which to enhance their understanding of Greek culture. Postgraduate students can utilise their linguistic and cultural knowledge in a diverse range of areas including education, the media, the arts, law, medicine and social work. The Greek Heritage Scholarship was established in 2004 through the offer of an annual donation from Vicki Adraskelas, a former student of the University of Sydney, to assist postgraduate students undertaking research in Modern Greek Studies. It is awarded annually on the recommendation of the department of Modern Greek to a student enrolled as a fulltime candidate in a postgraduate research degree in the department of Modern Greek, who proposes the soundest research proposal, and demonstrates the greatest need to travel overseas to Greece for research material.
