Internships Information

Program Objectives

Internships are an integral and compulsory part of our Graduate Diploma and Master of Arts degrees.

The internship program aims to:

  • broaden students' skills, expertise and experience in museum work.
  • enable students to explore how specific areas of museum practice fit into the larger institutional infrastructure in in order to expand students' understanding of museum work.
  • develop an understanding of the relationship between museum theory and institutional practice and to explore current debates in a chosen area of museum work.
  • develop awareness, understanding and critical appreciation of museum culture.

Internships generally do not begin until after students have completed the mandatory subject, The Museum Context in mid April. After this time an internship may be taken in full - time blocks or at a slower, part-time rate. You are free to make any arrangements that are convenient to you and your workplace supervisor, provided that number of neccessary, 7 hour days are completed and there is no conflict with class room sessions.

From Semester 1 2009, each internship unit will be 20 days long (instead of 30 days, as it has been). In total (for the two internship units) you will complete 40 internship days.
